West Bromwich Albion v Sunderland | Betting Preview

Date: August 16, 2014
Venue: The Hawthorns, West Bromwich, England
Kick-off time: 15:00 BST

West Bromwich will begin their season with a home match against Gus Poyet’s Sunderland on Saturday. Both teams were involved in the relegation scrap last season and both are thought to be heading the same way this season as well.

However, if Sunderland can play the way they did towards the later part of last season, there is no reason why they should worry about relegation. Both teams will look to be positive and get the job done as they hunt for all three points to start the season on a positive note.

West Bromwich Albion’s form

W-W-L-L-L

Alan Irvine’s side have not had a great pre-season by all accounts. While the couple of wins that you find here on the form guide came against the Sacramento Republic on the club’s tour of the United States, West Brom have flattered to deceive upon their return from the West. Nottingham Forest and Port Vale had subjected them to defeat before they lost 3-1 at home in their last pre-season game against Porto.

There is major room for improvement for West Brom and unless they get in some decent players, they face a problematic season ahead.

Sunderland’s form

W-L-D-W-W

Gus Poyet’s side have performed reasonably well in pre-season. They have won six games out of eight, drawing one and losing another to complete their pre-season preparation for the Premier League. In their last five games, Sunderland have won against Recreativo Huelva, lost against Nacional, drew against Vitoria Setubal, and won two consecutive games against Real Betis and Udinese.

Looking at the strength of the teams that they faced in the past couple of games and the positive results that they have obtained, it is safe to say that this team is on the right path. With more additions likely to be made to the squad, Sunderland should be able to outdo their points tally from last season.

Key Players

West Bromwich Albion: Saido Berahino

Berahino burst onto the scene last term and proved to be a handful for defenders across the league. It will be exciting to see how far his game has developed since and if he has been able to add a few more elements to his game. This guy has the potential to be dangerous.

Sunderland: Adam Johnson

Johnson turned in some great performances from the wing last season, scoring and assisting some crucial goals as he helped keep Sunderland in the Premier League. With the new season set to begin, Johnson will be looking to impress from the very offing as a place on the England team for the Euro ’16.

Betting advice

Sunderland can be expected to nick this one. While they have been able to defend well in pre-season, they have also got the goals. West Brom have been shabby as far as goal-scoring is concerned and their defence inspires little confidence, if any.

Sunderland are a great price at 3.6 to win this one. Paddy Power are also offering moneyback for all losing 1st/last goal-scorer, correct score & scorecast singles on this match if the match ends in a 0-0 draw.
