Villarreal v Celtic | Betting Preview

Date: September 3, 2014
Venue: Estadio El Madrigal
Kick off time: 19:45 BST

Villarreal will play Scottish giants Celtic in a friendly match with the major European leagues breaking for a two week long international break. It is presumed that some of the stars from both the teams will be missing in action when the two teams face off on Wednesday owing to their commitments to their national teams. However, Villarreal have started the La Liga season rather well and will look to keep up the momentum even if the next match is a friendly. Celtic on the other hand, will be looking to field a strong team which will be capable of giving the opposition a real match.

Villarreal’s form

W-W-W-W-L

Villarreal have had a stellar beginning to the new season. The ongoing season is the second season post their re-entry into the top tier of Spanish football. The Yellow Submarine did not have any issues of note last year as well as they looked comfortable even against the best of the Spanish top flight.

They have beaten Zaragoza, Levante, and Astana twice this season and their winning run was only halted by Barcelona this weekend. Villarreal could have easily nicked some points off their illustrious opponents at the weekend had it not been for some fantastic work from Lionel Messi.

Celtic’s form

W-D-L-L-D

Celtic beat Dundee United by a whopping score-line of 6-1 on August 16 to register their only win in the last couple of weeks or so. They have since been held 1-1 by Maribor, who also beat them in the second leg of the Champions League qualifiers 1-0.

It might be noted here though that Maribor had fielded an ineligible player on the second occasion because of which they have been knocked out of the competition with Celtic going through on a 3-0 default score. Inverness beat them on August 23 in the league while Dundee have also held them 1-1 at the weekend.

Key players

Villarreal: Ruben Garcia

In the absence of some of the international stars who will be with their national teams at this time, number 10 Ruben Garcia will be the top player on the pitch for Villarreal.

Celtic: Stefan Scepovic

The Serbian who signed up for Celtic on deadline day is widely expected to line up for his club on Wednesday. He has been brought in to score goals and he scored plenty in the Spanish second tier last season.

Betting advice

It is a friendly and that will allow both teams to play freely and one can expect a lot of goals in this. There’s not many bookies pricing this one up but this match is on the Betfair Exchange and with liquidity currently very thin it might be an idea to request a decent price for over 2.5 goals.
