Competition: UEFA Europa League
Fixture: Rijeka v Aberdeen
Date: Thursday, July 16, 2015
Venue: Kantrida Stadium, Rijeka
Kick off time: 20:00 hrs BST
Rijeka are to take on Scottish side Aberdeen in the second round of Europa League qualifiers this week.
Rijeka’s form: W-L-W-W-D
The home side have been in decent form in these past few games that they have featured in. Besides the one loss at Dinamo Zagreb, the side have not lost any of their games.
Rijeka have won three of their last five with wins over NK Osijek, NK Rudar Velenje, and FK Sarajevo. Their last match against NK Inter Zapresic ended in a goalless draw. They have scored quite a few goals in the recent past as well.
Aberdeen’s form: W-W-D-D-W
Aberdeen have remained unbeaten in their last five games in all competitions. While the Scottish top flight had ended in May, Aberdeen faced KF Shkendija in the first round of qualifiers in the Europa League.
The Scottish team made round 2 thanks to an away goal scored by Niall McGinn on July 2. They have taken their preparation seriously though with a friendly win against Raith Rovers on July 12.
Key Players and Team News
Rijeka: Albanian striker Bekim Balaj has been one of their brightest prospects. The 24-year-old has impressed in the pre-season games as well and should be able to play a major part on Thursday.
Aberdeen: Adam Rooney will clearly be their best hope of snatching an away goal or two in this upcoming game.
Aberdeen have what it takes to mick a surprise victory but they have an extremely cautious approach to these European qualifying games. The visitors will most definitely play for the draw and hope for an odd-counter attacking goal.
The hosts will take a no holds barred approach in this game and they have been playing some brilliant attacking football. I expect them to win this game despite the visitors’ best efforts. Given how defensive I expect the Dons to be, under 2.5 goals could be the bet here at a nice price of 2.2 with Coral.
