Republic of Ireland v Gibraltar Betting Preview

Date: October 11, 2014
Venue: Aviva Stadium, Dublin, Ireland
Kick-off time: 17:00 BST

Republic of Ireland hosts Gibraltar in the Euro Qualification Group D fixture. The new boys Gibraltar will be facing Republic of Ireland, making just seven international appearances before this, their first European experience.

Gibraltar’s first match against Poland was one to forget where they were swept aside by a rampant Polish side. Ireland, meanwhile, will look to build on their form.

Republic of Ireland form: D-D-L-W-W

Ireland left it late against the determined Georgia side and Everton midfielder, Aiden McGeady had to pull a rabbit out of his hat to steer his team to victory. Ireland managed to control the game, but Georgia was able to come back and bring to parity the proceedings.

Coach Martin O’Neill was happy with the effort, but was wary of the next game against Gibraltar. There’s still some work to be done with the squad and will take a bit of time.

Gibraltar form: L-L-D-W-L

One of the few surprise inclusions in the qualification, Gibraltar will make up for bodies in the tournament going by their form. Against Poland, they were absolutely hapless and were shredded to skins by the Poland attack.

A lot of work needs to be done and might take years for the players from ‘The Rock’ to come at a minimum competitive level. Only three players in the current squad are playing in England. For now, they’ll need a miracle to win against any decent team.

Key Players

Republic of Ireland: Aiden McGeady

The Everton midfielder has been a bit-part player at his club, but his ability to score crucial goals and also, a few spectacular ones is undeniable. He’s one to look forward to in this game.

Gibraltar: Jordan Perez

The current Gibraltar custodian is a fireman by occupation and could not save his side against the Polish fire. It will be interesting to see his skills against Ireland.
