Date: September 13, 2014
Venue: Santiago Bernabeu Stadium, Madrid, Spain
Kick-off time: 19.00 hours BST
The second Madrid derby of the season comes at a very early stage after both the teams clashed with each other in the Spanish Super Cup that Atletico won. The bragging rights are now in the Atletico half of Madrid after winning La Liga last season. Real, meanwhile, won their tenth Champions League title.
Real Madrid form: L-D-L-W-L
After two games, Real sits tenth in La Liga below Atletico on three points. The new signings still have not bedded in Carlo Ancelotti’s system. A lethargic second half display against Real Sociedad in the last match saw them lose from a winning position.
The players need to cut down the lax attitude; otherwise, they will slip further in the title race early in the season.
Atletico Madrid form: W-D-W-D-W
Atletico’s ship has been steady so far with a draw and a win in the last two matches. Against Real, they have to conjure something extraordinary to win at the Bernabeu. Mario Mandzukic has been brilliant for Atletico so far with Diego Costa’s presence not missed upfront.
Against their last opponents, Eibar, Atletico looked shaky at times but were able to see off a stiff Eibar resistance.
Real Madrid: Gareth Bale
The true successor to Cristiano Ronaldo, Bale improved leaps and bounds in his first season and was a vital part in Real’s Champions League campaign. He also scored some pretty good and important goals along the way. Has picked up where he left last season.
Atletico Madrid: Mario Mandzukic
The ex-Bayern striker has been an astute signing so far for the Atletico side. His movement, hold up play is world class and against Real might prove to be a tricky customer. Atletico has been blessed with world-class strikers right from Fernando Torres to the recently departed, Diego Costa.
Mandzukic looks already at home in this Atletico squad and will be an important player as the season progresses.
The match could probably be a drab affair considering the recently concluded international hangover with under 2.5 goals expected in the game (1.85 with bet365). The gritty affiar could end up in a draw for which BetVictor offer 3.8.
