Paris St-Germain play the first home game of their Ligue 1 title defence on Saturday when they host Bastia, who finished tenth last term.

PSG’s form: D-W-W-W

PSG will be expected to once again comfortably retain the French crown, with perhaps only Monaco likely to mount a serious challenge.

Their first competitive game of the season resulted in a straightforward 2-0 win against Guingamp to win the Trophee des Champions, with Zlatan Ibrahimovic scoring both goals. The mercurial Swede scored another brace in PSG’s opening league game, but also missed a penalty as the champions only managed a two all draw against Stade de Reims.

This season, Laurent Blanc will be tasked with making progress in Europe, after PSG came very close to making the semi-finals of the Champions League in each of the last two seasons. President Nasser al-Khelaifi has stated that winning Europe’s premier trophy is an ambition this season.

Bastia’s form: D-W-D-D

Bastia began their league campaign with a frenetic three all draw against Marseille. Claude Makelele will be pleased with how his players responded to going 3-1 down, but will have concerns over a leaky defence.

Their form in pre-season was indifferent, with a win over Genoa preceded by draws against second division outfits Norwich of England and Clermont Foot of France.

Key Players/Team News

Paris St-Germain:

PSG’s danger man is undoubtedly Ibrahimovic, who scored 26 league goals last season, and looks on course to keep up the phenomenal strike rate this term.

They have other quality players, though, with Javier Pastore in good nick so far this season, and Edinson Cavani always willing to work hard and capable of producing a moment of inspiration.

Bastia:

French striker Christopher Maboulou scored two goals in that draw with Marseille, in what was his first competitive game for the club.

Makelele should stick to the same team which started against Marseille, although keeper Alphonse Areola is on loan from PSG so will not play.

Betting advice

The Paris team should have too much quality for Bastia but can only be backed at 1.17. Instead I’m backing Edison Cavani to be an Anytime Scorer which is a best price of 1.61 with Boylesports.

Ladbrokes are offering 1.53 for more than 2.5 goals to be scored in the game and those are the best odds which is decent for what looks like a certain result.
