Moldova v Austria | Betting Preview

Date: October 9, 2014
Venue: Stadional Zimbru, Chisinau, Moldova
Time: 19:45 hours BST

Moldova face Austria in a group G Euro 2016 qualifier on Thursday. Moldova are unlikely to make it into the top three spots of Group G, and are likely just in the group for the ride. On the other hand, Austria will be challenging Sweden, Russia, and Montenegro for Euro 2016 qualification, and will looking to get back to where they were eight years ago when they qualified for the Euros as automatic hosts.

Moldova: W-D-L-L-L

Moldova’s unlikeliness to qualify for the Euros is highlighted by their most recent competitive performance, a 2-0 loss to Moontenegro in their opening qualifier. Before that, Moldova lost two, drew one, and won one out of four friendlies.

Austria: W-D-D-W-D

Austria kicked off their Euro 2016 campaign with a much better result, a 1-1 draw against Sweden. Austria has not played that many friendlies, and as such has not lost a game since October of last year. That’s a run of six games without a loss.

Key players

Moldova: Artur Ionita

Ionita, the Hellas Verona midfielder, is one of the few Moldovan players who don’t play domestically. The number seven will have an important role in Austria, as he will look to help out his defenders and also look to create chances for his forwards. Moldova may not have many chances, so Ionita must look to create as many as possible

Austria: Marc Janko

Austria should be relatively untroubled this match, and so the onus will fall on their forwards to get them the three points. Experienced striker Marc Janko likely won’t play the 90 minutes, and will be hoping to get on the score sheet while he’s on the pitch.

Betting Advice

Austria isn’t a star-studded squad, but they are slightly better than Moldova (5.25 at bet365) on quality and should win this one easy. William Hill are offering 2.2 for more than 2.5 goals in this game.
