What should punters keep in mind when betting on the Masters?

The Masters tournament is the first major of the year and arguably the most iconic event in the whole of golf. The main reason for this has to be the fact that the course’s natural beauty was born in a nursery. Indeed, Augusta National lies on the site of a former nursery and today has over 80,000 plants which comprise over 350 different species. Needless to say, when this tournament comes around in early spring it produces one of the most breathtaking spectacles in the sporting world.

Given that this is the case, you will generally find that the Masters draws in those who aren’t necessarily seasoned golf fans for the week which, in essence, makes this competition one of the most eagerly awaited events on the sporting calendar. In addition to that, another compelling drawcard is obviously the latest US Masters betting odds. Take current Masters favourite Jon Rahm for instance, the Spaniard is at generous odds of 9/1 to win the 2022 edition despite being ranked as the second-best player in the official world golf rankings.

Perhaps a better way to illustrate the unprecedented value on offer is to shine a light on the fact that the current world number one ranked golfer, Scottie Scheffler, has been priced at outside odds of 16/1 to win.

With this in mind, you may be scratching your head as to why this is the case and which golfer you should back when the best ones in the world aren’t necessarily fancied to win?

It is, of course, a good question, but you have to keep in mind that Augusta National suits a very particular set of skills that most golfers don’t ordinarily have. Granted, there is always the chance that a certain player not famed for possessing the talent to win at Augusta National finds a bit of form and enters a purple patch over the weekend which propels them up the leaderboard but in general, this is a course that will favour golfers who historically play a certain way.

Ultimately, there are four types of shots that a golfer needs to win at Augusta, and at the top of this list is a big draw given that the course suits a right-to-left shape off the tee. In addition to a natural draw, players need to be able to chip competently against the grain, have an eye for the spectacular, and also putt exceptionally well as the greens are like glass at Augusta National.

So, who among the current favourites can tick some if not all of the above requirements needed for success at this fabled old course? You would have to say that Jon Rahm undoubtedly has the required skill set to win a green jacket out of the favourites, as do Jordan Spieth, Dustin Johnson, and, of course, Rory McIlroy who is at odds of 14/1.

You probably don’t need to look much further than those four players when trying to select a winner at the 2022 edition but having said that, it’s always wise to keep an eye on the in-play betting markets for the Masters so you can monitor the journey of an unknown in the event they come charging out of the left-field and threatening to win.
