Lille v Wolfsburg

Date: Thursday, December 11, 2014
Venue: Stade Pierre-Mauroy, Villeneuve d’Ascq
Kick off time: 20:05 hrs BST

Lille will need to up their game by a great deal if they want to even entertain any hopes of qualification into the knock out stages. The equation is pretty simple going into this game. The visitors are second in the group while the home side are third. Lille trail Wolfsburg by 3 points and have a greatly inferior goal difference as well. As things stand, Lille will need to win by 3 goals or more in order to qualify or else, the visitors will go through even if they were to lose 2-0.

Lille’s form: L-D-L-D-D

The hosts have not managed a win in their last five competitive fixtures in all competitions. The side have lost a couple and drawn three games during this period. While they have held Ligue 1 champions Paris Saint Germain to a 1-1 draw at home, 1-1 draws against Lens and Krasnodar in particular might well come back to haunt them.

The draw against Krasnodar was criminal at best with the side squandering as many chances as it did. If they are to have any hopes of qualification, Lille need to play free-flowing dynamic football. Are they capable of it? Only time will tell.

Wolfsburg’s form: W-L-L-W-W

The visitors are coming into this one on the backs of successive wins in the Bundesliga against Borussia Monchengladbach and Hannover.

They were beaten by group leaders Everton in their last outing in the competition by a couple of goals to nil. The side had also experienced a 3-2 defeat at Schalke after having defeated Hamburg 2-0 at home in the German Bundesliga.

Key Players

Lille: Liverpool loanee and striker Divock Origi has drawn comparisons with some great strikers. However, the man is yet to do something special for his side and this will be one opportunity which the Belgian will be looking to grab by the scruff of the neck.

Wolfsburg: Former Chelsea attacking midfielder Kevin De Bruyne has been a real success in the Bundesliga. The assists and the goals have become a regular affair these days and he will want to shine in Europe.

Betting Advice

The last time the sides met, the match ended in a 1-1 draw. I won’t be surprised to see the same result yet again with BetVictor offering 1.77 for less than 2.5 goals in the game. A 1-1 draw is a favourite scoreline with the bookmakers too, and is 7.0 at bet365.
