Horse Racing Breeding – Coolmore

The Coolmore breeding operation is one of the biggest in the world and it breeds horses for both Flat and NH Racing and it produces champions every year in both spheres. They have 16 stallions on their NH roster so we will take a look at them first.

ASK

Sadlers Well – Request
He was trained by Sir Michael Stoute throughout his racing career and although he finished his 3yo career with a decent BHA rating of 90, he improved as an older horse to win 2 Group 1 races and he finished with a BHA rating of 121. He stands for 3000 euro’s he is yet to breed anything of real note but it’s still early days.

CHAMPS ELYSEES

Danehill – Hasili
Trained by Andre Fabre in his younger days he was a reasonable horse just below top class but it wasn’t until he joined the great Bobby Frankel to race in the USA where he excelled and became a Grade 1 winning individual. He is a new recruit to Coolmore and currently stands for 6500 euro’s which may be decent value because I can see him being a more dual purpose sire having already bred some nice flat types.

DYLAN THOMAS

Danehill – Lagrion
This top class individual who won the Arc as a 4yo aswell as 5 other Group 1’s has not really been the flat success they were looking for. Although, he hasn’t done that bad considering Blazing Speed is a 4 million earner and Dylan Mouth a Group 1 winner, plus some old favourites like Spark Plug and Caspian Prince he is standing for 5000 euro’s.

FLEMENSFIRTH

Alleged – Etheldreda
A Group 1 flat winner for John Gosden he is well-known in NH circles for being a really top sire and has bred several jumps winners; the most prolific being Tidal Bay who has won 15 times. he has also bred Imperial Commander, a Cheltenham Gold Cup winner and The Last Samurai who was 2nd in the Grand National. He stands for 12000 euro’s.

GETAWAY

Monson – Guernica
A Group 1 winner on the flat it is early days for him as a sire. You will probably see a lot of his progeny starting off in National Hunt flat races. The Henderson mare Verdana Blue is probably his best one so far stands for 6500 euro’s.

IMPERIAL MONARCH

Galileo – Ionian Sea
He was favourite for the French Derby but finished only 8th. He won a Group 1 race but was really lucky (Main Sequence with a clear run would have bolted up) and none of his progeny have made the racecourse yet, so we will have to wait and see. Stands for 2500 euro’s.

LEADING LIGHT

Montjeu – Dance Parade
He was a St Leger winner so he was always going to be a national hunt sire (probably one of the reasons it’s a big mistake to go for the Leger for prospective breeders) plus he is a full brother to decent hurdler John Constable. None of his progeny are yet to race and he stands at what could be decent value in 4500 euro’s.

MAHLER

Galileo – Rainbow Goddess
He was a decent flat performer who finished 2nd in the St Leger and 3rd in the Melbourne Cup and he was always going to be a stick breed. He has started off okay with the likes of Sutton Place and Red Jack who is unbeaten so far and looks a really good prospect. Stands for 5500 euro’s.

MILAN

Sadlers Wells – Kithanga
He is a top national hunt sire and has bred a Champion hurdle winner and a Grand National winner. As a racehorse he won the St Leger and was runner-up in the Breeders Cup Turf. If you have one of his progeny you are virtually guaranteed to be a winning racehorse owner he stands for 7500 euro’s.

OCOVANGO

Monson – Crystal Maze
A decent flat performer but not quite top class and an interesting new recruit to the Coolmore jumps roster, he stands for 3500 euro’s.

POUR MOI

Montjeu – Gwynn
I’m a bit puzzled why he is on the jumps roster as he has just bred a Derby winner (Wings Of Eagles) so maybe they will have a rethink. There is no fee down for him so its difficult to know which way he will be heading as a sire.

SANS FRONTIERS

Galileo – Lila
He was an Irish St Leger winner and could prove to be a decent NH sire. None of his progeny have raced yet so we will have to wait and see. Stands for 2500 euro’s.

SOLDIER OF FORTUNE

Galileo – Affianced
Top class racehorse and a brilliant winner of the Irish Derby. He was also placed in an Arc and although he is on the jumps roster he is very much a dual purpose sire. His flat progeny are not top class but they do perform to a good standard. It’s far to early to say how he will do as a NH sire but he has begun okay and they think so with his fee which is 6000 euro’s.

WALK IN THE PARK

Montjeu – Classic Park
A decent racehorse who was 2nd in an Epsom Derby and strangely enough he had one run over hurdles at Auteuil were he was out the frame, so with him not being gelded it was off to the breeding sheds in what turned out to be a very good decision. He is the sire of Douvan who is a top class NH performer and has several other useful progeny. He stands at a private fee.

WESTERNER

Danehill – Walensee
A top class stayer on the flat and an Arc 2nd he has proved to be a very good NH sire and has bred a lot of stamina into his progeny. Although they don’t all win the top NH races they do win races of a decent standard, his best is probably Cole Harden who has won at the top grade. He stands for 5000 euro’s.

YEATS

Sadlers Well – Lyndonville
A four-time Ascot Gold Cup winner but none of that would have happened if it wasn’t for the injury he incurred before the 2004 Derby. A race he would probably have won and the rest is history. His stud career has started out well plus he has also had a few flat winners he is very much a sire to keep an eye on. He stands for 6500 euro’s.
