Fight or farce? Floyd Mayweather v Conor McGregor

On the 27th August at approximately 4 AM GMT what is billed to be one of the biggest fights in boxing is about to take place between Floyd Mayweather JR and Conor McGregor

Floyd Mayweather boasts the perfect record of 49 wins without loss with 26 KO’s and has defeated boxing greats like Manny Pacquiao, Saul Alvarez, Miguel Cotto, Shane Mosely Ricky Hatton and Oscar De La Hoya he is considered to be one of the greatest pound to pound boxers of all time.

Conor McGregor also boasts a perfect boxing record but that’s only because he has never had any fights, his MMA record boasts 21 wins 18 by KO and 3 losses which were all by submission so no real shame in that.

Considering Conor McGregor has never had any boxing fights or proved himself in any way is this a fight or a farce it is a huge PPV event and tickets on sites like Viagogo Stubhub and Vivid Seats have been selling for anything between £1413.00  – £44500.00 which is incredible considering it might not even last more than a few rounds, so why are people paying such ridiculous amounts? Well it’s probably because they’re praying for one of the biggest upsets in boxing history and saying you were there when Mayweather got beaten.

So now who will win this fight. Well the bookmakers make Mayweather JR favourite at 1-6 McGregor 5-1 and the draw 50-1 on the exchanges you can get a best priced 2-11 Mayweather JR 29-5 for McGregor and 113-1 for the draw so the bookmakers certainly think Mayweather JR will win.

Personally I don’t think this fight should be allowed to take place. I have it in the farce category and I think you are getting an incredible price on Mayweather. It’s not often you say that about a 1-6 shot but let’s be honest, 1-100 would be more accurate here and anyone taking those odds on McGregor winning must be crazy. They are being completely ripped off. Even if he did somehow miraculously win you may be in the pay queue but you should be getting at least 6 times those odds in my opinion.

Looking at this sparring compilation of Mayweather and McGregor, you can see there is a gulf in class between the two. Mayweather is much faster, has superior skills and he has faced boxers who can hit harder than McGregor. Conor’s footwork and balance is poor and Mayweather will be able to see anything Conor throws. All this you’d expect between a boxer and non-boxer in a boxing match but my issue is that the odds are clearly wrong. It’s perhaps the support from McGregor’s huge fan base who let’s be honest, like his ‘banter’ more than his fighting ability that’s keeping Mayweather’s odds higher than they should be.

So anyone with a spare 6 grand go out and buy yourself a grand because I can’t see any other result than a Mayweather win and if you’re looking for value maybe select a round.
