Club Brugge v Brondby

Date: July 31, 2014
Venue: Jan Breydel Stadium-Bruges, Belgium
Kick-off Time: 19:30 BST

The first leg of the Europa League qualification draw between Club Brugge and Brondby will be played at the Belgian club’s home ground. This third qualifying round fixture will be of importance to both sides as they look to play in the Europe’s second prestigious tournament.

Brugge’s Form

One of the best clubs in the Belgian league, Club Brugge also holds the record for consecutive participations in the UEFA Cup. Going by their form, Brugge will have to play out of their skins to get past Brondby. Their last game (Belgian Pro League) against Waasland-Beveren was a 2-0 win and should give the much needed boost before the midweek qualifying fixture.

Brondby’s Form

Brondby’s best result so far, this season came against Liverpool in a pre-season friendly where they matched toe-to-toe against the Merseyside club. They are still a bit far from finding their form and the inconsistent displays are still a worry.

Brondby has a good attacking unit and against Brugge they should count on their attackers to be clinical.

Key Players

Brugge: Oscar Duarte

Costa Rican defender, Duarte had a great World Cup campaign with his country and has carried his excellent form to the club. Against Waasland-Beveren he put on a solid shift and also scored a goal to give his side a victory.

Brondby’s attackers should be aware that he can keep them in his pockets if they fail to get past him.

Brondby: Johan Elmander

The journeyman striker, Elmander has returned to Brondby (his last spell with the club was a decent one scoring 22 goals in two seasons). His Bolton Wanderers spell saw him being recognised as a poacher of goals and a great header of the ball.

His movement in and around the box is really good. Pace might be an issue but makes up for his ability to bring his midfielders in the attacking play.
