Atletico Madrid v Malaga Betting Preview

Date: Saturday, November 22, 2014
Venue: Vicente Calderon Stadium, Madrid
Kick off time: 15:00 hrs BST

Atletico Madrid will be looking to move into the top 3 in the La Liga when they welcome Malaga to the Vicente Calderon stadium on Saturday. While the home side are currently in fourth spot in the league with 23 points from 11 games, the visitors are close behind in 6th position with 21 points. Both teams will be looking for a win as it would enable them to hold on to a Champions League spot for next season.

Atletico Madrid’s form: W-W-W-W-L

The home side are coming off a blip after going down to a manager-less Real Sociedad on November 9. The match had finished 2-1 in favour of Sociedad ending Atleti’s fantastic winning streak of five consecutive games.

They had won against Espanyol (2-0) in the league and followed it up with a big 5-0 win over Malmo in the Champions League on October 22. Thereafter, Atleti had won their games against Getafe (1-0), Cordoba (4-2), and Malmo (0-2) before they faced Sociedad on November 9.

Malaga’s form: W-W-W-W-W

Malaga are coming into this game following an impeccable record in their last five competitive fixtures. They have won all five of their matches starting from October 4 which means that the side are unbeaten for more than a month now.

The visitors had started this run with a win against Granada (2-1) and followed it up with a 1-2 win at Cordoba. They ended the month of October with a 4-0 win over Rayo Vallecano. Malaga beat Real Scociedad away by a solitary goal before winning 2-1 at home against high flying Eibar on November 8.

Key Players

Atletico Madrid: French international Antoinne Griezman has proved to be a great buy for Diego Simeone this term. The former Sociedad winger has been amongst the goals in the recent past and he has been playing some of the best football of his career under the Argentina coach.

Malaga: 21 year old Spanish striker Juanmi has found the back of the net in their last three games and it would not be surprising if he went on and scored at the Vicente Calderon on Saturday. The kid has shown that he can handle the big stage and it will be interesting to see him on the pitch at the weekend.

Betting Advice

While Malaga (8.0 at bet365) are coming into this game with an impeccable record, Atletico (1.5 at William Hill) will be extremely difficult to beat at the Calderon. Also, the home team has a lot more talented players compared to the opposition and although they do not have a great record against Malaga in the recent past, I feel Atletico Madrid will win this game.
