Aberdeen will attempt to overcome a 2-0 deficit from the first leg against Real Sociedad as they try to qualify for the UEFA Europa League for the upcoming season.

After going down to the Spanish side in the first leg of the third round of qualifiers, Aberdeen will need to punch high above their weights if they are to be able to overcome what now looks like a humongous challenge.

Aberdeen’s form

The loss against Sociedad in the first leg was Aberdeen’s first of the season after they remained undefeated in the preceding four matches. The matches in question were also qualifiers for the upcoming Europa League featuring Daugava Riga and Groningen.

While the former were dispatched 8-0 over the two legs, the latter posed a tough challenge for the Scottish side. After a goalless draw in the home leg, Aberdeen defeated Groningen 2-1 away in order to enter the third round of qualifiers.

Real Sociedad’s form

Real Sociedad have had a mixed start to their pre-season this year as they went down to Ajax Amsterdam 3-1 for starters. The match was followed by a 1-1 draw against Feyenoord and a 1-0 win against NEC Nijmegen.

Sociedad won the first leg of the third round Europa League qualifiers 2-0 against Aberdeen before going down to Alava Deportivo 3-1 on Sunday. There is no need to dwell on the result on Sunday though as the coach rested his first choice players for this crucial match on Thursday.

Key Players

Aberdeen: Adam Rooney

With 6 goals in five games for Aberdeen this year, Adam Rooney is definitely the man to watch out for as the two teams take the field on Thursday. Rooney is in great form at the moment and could prove to be quite a handful for the Sociedad defenders.

Real Sociedad: Inigo Martinez

The talented and young Spanish defender played a part in Spain’s under 21 win last summer and had a great season for his club last season. While it is thought that Europe’s top clubs are interested in his signature, Martinez will need to be in top shape as Sociedad look to tackle the threat posed by Rooney.

Betting Advice

Although home support can make things happen and football is a strange sport, Sociedad are a much superior unit currently and the home team’s hopes are hanging by a thread. Only take this bet with 1.7 with William Hill for a Sociedad victory because any lower than that isn’t value.
