Group G in the Champions League has all the teams tied with each of them on a solitary point. Sporting CP were held by the lowly Maribor team, while Chlesea were strangled by an impressive Schalke 04 team in the last CL gameweek.
Sporting CP form: W-D-D-W-D
Sporting’s domestic form has been okay and their main problem has been getting many draws in along the way. They are sixth in the Portuguese league on ten points, six points behind league leaders Benefica.
In the last match against Porto FC, they showed great discipline in the midfield and enough attacking impetus was there with Nani and Co. An unlucky own goal by Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr gave Porto the lifeline, for Sporting it was a heartbreak. This season the main issue has been scoring goals for Sporting and this can haunt them in the end.
Chelsea form: W-D-D-W-W
Chelsea’s last CL game against Schalke highlighted their defensive issues, masked by their free scoring run. Schalke midfields carved open the pivot of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic. Fabregas’ tendency to ignore his defensive duties over burdens Matic, a recurring theme since the start of the season.
Any good side will be able to punish this, as Schalke showed.
Sporting CP: William Carvalho
His burgeoning reputation attracted many clubs including Chelsea and for Jose Mourinho this will be another chance to scout him. Carvalho can break up the play and find any man in front of him. His passing range is wide and can be the creator and destroyer in the centre of the park
Chelsea: Thibaut Courtouis
The gangly goalkeeper has been impressive on his Chelsea return, keeping Peter Cech on the bench. His long limbs can keep ball out of the net, thanks to the long reach. His distribution is also decent along with his concentration. He’s never been caught snoozing in the goal.
Chelsea are 1.75 to win this game but I think the hosts will give them a fine run for their money. Less than 2.5 goals in the game looks more appealing at 1.85 with BetVictor.
