With the national hunt season upon us, it makes sense to take a look at Chepstow race course which is well-known for its top quality National Hunt racing. The Totesport Jumps Season Opener will take place at Chepstow on the 14th and 15th of October and there’s £300,000 in prize money on offer.
Chepstow racecourse is of course north of Chepstow in Monmouthshire, Wales and it’s also home to the Welsh National. The feature race is run 2 days after Christmas (when not postponed due to the weather) and includes lots of top-class stayers. With £150,000 up for grabs you’re always going to attract some brilliant horses. The Welsh National is also a recognised trial for the Cheltenham Gold Cup and the Grand National.
There’s much more on offer though and there’s a total of 32 fixtures this year.
The course itself is left-handed in an oval-like shape and is approximately 2 miles around. Front runners do particularly well at Chepstow and for the jumps there are 5 fences in the straight of 11 in total.
Multiple champion jockey Gordon Richards famously won eleven consecutive races at Chepstow at a two-day meeting in 1933. He won all six races on the first day and the first five races on the next and was in fact only beaten in a close finish in the final race of the meeting.
Last season’s top jockey at Chepstow was Richard Johnson and you can use this info to enter the At The Races Chepstow competition where you could win tickets to the Season Opener. The prize also includes an overnight stay at the Hilton Newport and lunch in the lawn Marquee.
