HJK Helsinki v Club Brugge | Betting Preview

HJK Helsinki v Club Brugge | Betting Preview

Date: October 2, 2014
Venue: Sonera Stadium, Helsinki, Finland
Kick-off time: 20:05 BST

The Europa League encounter between HJK and Club Brugge will be the one from the Group B. HJK sits last in the group table after a loss to FC Copenhagen, while Brugge drew against a good Torino team in their first match.

HJK Helsinki form: D-L-W-W-W

HJK are cruising in the Finnish League with a healthy lead. In the European competition, HJK got the better of any Belgian team and with only their second appearance in any major European championship, the Finnish side will be looking to get over that.

Also, an interesting fact that HJK are still looking for their first group stage game and a win. They have a good attack but in Europe the domestic attack can look like cats instead of tigers.

Club Brugge form: D-D-W-W-D

Brugge struggled against Torino in their first match that reflected their overall form. Even domestically, their form has been inconsistent; the league table position says the whole story. A fifth position, though not far from the league leaders, not what’s expected from them after this stage.

In the last three matches, they are recovering their form and will look to build on that in midweek.

Key Players

HJK Helsinki: Demba Savage

The Gambian forward has been in peach form in the last five matches, scoring a hattrick against Mariehamn. His linkup play and a strong physical frame give the wingbacks and wingers a focal point to point their crosses and passes. His Europa League credentials are not that great, but finding a purple patch can elevate his game.

Club Brugge: Matt Ryan

The Australian custodian has been a constant name on the team sheet for the Belgian club. His excellent reflexes and commanding goalkeeping has earned him plaudits in the league, sometimes though his defence has let him down. Overall, against the Helsinki club, his big game temperament will be put to test, heavily.

Prediction

A difficult one to predict as not much separates these teams in terms of quality. A draw is a likely result with bet365 offering 3.5 for it to end level.

Dynamo Kyiv v Steaua Bucharest | Betting Preview

Dynamo Kyiv v Steaua Bucharest | Betting Preview

Date: October 2, 2014
Venue: NSK Olimpijs’kyj, Kyiv (Kiev)
Kick off time: 18:00 hrs BST

Dynamo Kyiv will welcome Steaua Bucharest to their home stadium on Thursday as Europa League action resumes this week. Both teams have been victorious in their previous game in Group J of the tournament and they will be looking to win yet again on matchday 2.

Dynamo Kyiv form: W-W-W-D-W

Dynamo Kiev are coming into this game on the backs of three back to back wins. The first of them had been a 3-0 win that came in the Europa League matchday 1 against Rio Ave away. Dynamo followed it up with a 4-1 hammering of Volyn in the League at home. The side have won their last competitive fixture – a Cup match against Karpaty – by a solitary goal on Saturday.

The last time when a team managed to take some points off them in the League was back on September 13 when Zorya managed a 2-2 draw at home against Kyiv.

Steaua Bucharest form: D-W-W-W-W

The visitors are coming into this game after having been held to a stalemate at home by Astra in the Romanian league. However, Steaua had won four straight matches going into last weekend’s match in a run which begun on September 12.

They had beaten Gaz Metan Medias 3-1 at home and followed it up with a massive 6-0 win over Aalborg in the Europa League. Steaua had then gone on to record a close victory away at Petrolul (2-3) and followed it up with a routine 3-0 win at Berceni on September 25.

Key Players

Dynamo Kyiv: Andriy Yarmolenko

Ukranian international striker Yarmolenko will be the main threat for the opposition in this upcoming match. Having got a goal in his last outing in the Europa League, the number 10 will be confident of getting his name on the score-sheet once more.

Steaua Bucharest: Claudiu Keseru

Keseru scored a hat-trick in his side’s 6-0 desecration of Aalborg on the opening matchday of the Europa League. The 28 year old Romanian striker has been in good goal-scoring form and can be counted upon to do well on that front once more on Thursday.

Betting Advice

This will be a close game but the hosts should come out on top and I recommend backing at Kyiv 1.7 with BetVictor. Get on quick because this price will shorten in the lead up to this game.

Zenit St Petersburg v Monaco | Betting Preview

Zenit St Petersburg v Monaco | Betting Preview

Date: October 1, 2014
Venue: Stadion Petrovskij, Sankt-Peterburg, Russia
Kick off time: 17:0 hrs BST

Zenit are set to welcome Monaco of France to St Petersburg on Wednesday as the two sides go head to head in their group C match in the UEFA Champions League. Both sides have made winning starts to their respective campaigns with Zenit the more convincing winners from the previous match day in the Champions League.

Zenit form: D-W-W-W-W

Zenit are unbeaten in their last five games. They come into the second round of matches in the group stage of the champions league after having drawn against Spartak Moscow in the Russian top division.

Prior to this match, Europa League winning Portuguese manager Andre Villas Boas’ side had gone four straight matches without dropping any points as they won against Anzhi (2-1), Rostov(5-0), Benfica (2-0) and Dinamo Moscow (3-2).

AS Monaco form: L-W-W-W-L

Monaco have not been able to cope well after a couple of their star players left the principality in the summer. While James Rodriguez had moved to Real Madrid days after the dust around the World Cup had settled, Radamel Falcao made a deadline day move to Manchester United.

That their campaign has been hit by these high profile departures have been well documented. They come into this game on the backs of defeat in Ligue 1 to OGC Nice. While they did win three on the trot prior to this game – all 1-0 wins against Montpellier, Guingamp, and Bayer Leverkusen (in Europe), Monaco were beaten 2-1 by Lyon on September 12.

Key Players

Zenit: Hulk

Former Porto star Hulk, who had been a part of the Brazil team for the World Cup earlier this year, has been in devastating form for Zenit. He has been handed a fresh lease of life in Zenit after the arrival of his former coach Villas Boas. Hulk scored one of the goals against Benfica on match day 1 and will be looking to contribute to the team’s charge for goals.

Monaco: Joao Moutinho

While Moutinho has been reported to be angered by the negativity surrounding Monaco’s campaign, his performances on the pitch haven’t been affected. In fact, it was his strike against Leverkusen which proved to be the winner and the Portuguese international central midfielder has not lost any of those instincts which marked him out as one of Europe’s most talented players in his position.

Betting Advice

Zenit will be definite favourites but Monaco could look to staunchly defend and prevent a total whitewash. Zenit to win this one but with less than 2.5 goals to be scored in the game – which is at 1.8 with BetVictor.

Bayer Leverkusen v Benfica | Betting Preview

Bayer Leverkusen v Benfica | Betting Preview

Date: October 1, 2014
Venue: Bay Arena, Leverkusen, Germany
Kick-off time: 19:45 BST

Champions League Group C has some serious competition for the final two qualification places and looks to go down the wire. Bayer Leverkusen will host Portuguese side Benfica in an exciting Champions League clash. Both Benfica and Bayer have met in the past and Benfica have a stranglehold over the fixture which Bayer will look to break.

Bayer Leverkusen form: D-L-L-W-D

Roger Schmidt’s side has surprised many this season with their good results and their current standing, which is partly due to the points dropped by other Champions League hopeful teams. Nevertheless, they still have managed to keep churning out draws in the past five matches with some inconsistent displays.

Against Benfica, riding one’s luck will be a dangerous game plan and they’ll need to dish out a serious performance.

Benfica form: D-W-L-W-W

Benfica lost their first group stage match against Zenit St. Petersburg and now they have a task not to repeat last season’s disappointing exit from the Group stages. Domestically, Benfica have dominated the proceeding so far but there’s more work to be done in Europe.

An away encounter in CL is always a tricky one and can cause issues for the visiting team. Benfica have to be compact in their play to struggle the home side.

Key Players

Bayer Leverkusen: Heung Min-Son

The South Korean forward has been an influential player for the Bayer side. He scored a winner against Ausberg last week to keep his side in hunt for the title. His all round game along with his wide array of shooting skills will cause Benfica defenders lot of problems.

Benfica: Anderson Talisca

An unknown player outside of Portugal, the attacking midfielder is quietly making name for himself. The Brazilian born midfielder snapped up by Benfica to play for them has repaid their faith with five goals in six matches. Benfica has been associated with unearthing excellent South American talents; Talisca might be one for the future.

Betting Advice

Bayer Leverkusen are strong at home and will look to frustrate Benfica in midfield. A Leverkusen win is very likely here and can be backed at a decent price at 1.91 with bet365.

Celtic v Dinamo Zagreb | Betting Preview

Celtic v Dinamo Zagreb | Betting Preview

Date: October 2, 2014
Venue: Celtic Park, Glasgow, Scotland
Kick-off time: 19:45 hours BST

The Scottish side Celtic are looking to hand another defeat to the Czech side, Dinamo Zagreb. Both the sides drawn in Group D are involved in a three horse race to qualify with Red Bull Salzburg. Dinamo have never won in Scotland and will be looking forward to a nervy encounter at their least favourite location to play.

Celtic form: W-D-D-W-W

Celtic are involved in a close battle with fellow Scottish sides, Inverness and Hamilton in the Scottish Premiership. Their Premiership form is imperious and includes a win the old firm derby against Aberdeen. A draw in their away game against Red Bull Salzburg was an important result.

If they navigate the rest of the campaign by winning home games and playing it safely away, the next stage in Europa beckons them.

Dinamo Zagreb form: D-W-L-W-W

Dinamo won their first game against the lowly Astra side and sits top of the table. Against Celtic, they will meet a familiar foe; having met the Scottish side in the past. Dinamo have won all their home games against Celtic, but have failed to score and win.

They will look to get a point from this fixture to maintain the lead.

Key Players

Celtic: Stefan Scepovic

The under fire striker, Stefan Scepovic is yet to score for his new club. With last match’s goal scoring hero, John Guidetti ineligible, the Serbian sharp shooter will replace him. He’s come close to scoring on a few instances he has started but failed to convert.

On the biggest stage, he has the pedigree to make an impact against European opposition.

Dinamo Zagreb: El Arbi Hilal Soudani

The mercurial winger has lit up the Croatian league with his attacking displays. Celtic manager, Ronny Deila has singled out Soudani as the most dangerous man in the Zagreb side. His hattrick against Astra was impressive; he now has six goals in eight matches. Quite a good record for someone who plays as a winger.

Betting Advice

It will be difficult to call this one given how closely the two teams are matched and the fact that the recent results do not give a perfect indicator either.

Celtic are favourites at odds of 2.1 but I’m unconvinced by this price and Zagreb are used to winning matches themselves. Celtic have conceded in 5 of their last 6 matches and so over 2.5 goals looks the pick for me at 1.95 with Bet365.

Live Betting – How To Green Up on Betting Exchanges

Live Betting – How To Green Up on Betting Exchanges

Oh how things have changed. Until the turn of the century, if you wanted a bet, it would be visiting the local bookmaker, writing out a betting slip and handing it to the cashier. If successful, you could return to the counter and collect your winning. Then came the internet. Then came betting exchanges. Significant advances in technology have transformed the way that consumers are able to have a financial interest in sports, politics and novelty events; thanks to betting exchanges, there is now the option to back, lay and trade.

Betting exchanges facilitate peer to peer betting and enable individuals to act in the same manner as bookmakers, offering odds on a range of events. Taking a bet on an occurrence not to be successful, is known as laying, and was previously confined to bookmakers, but the rise of exchanges has enabled anyone to participate in laying. Being able to back and lay has also created the opportunity to ‘trade’ on events, much in the same way that financial traders and city boys do. The same strategies and methodology applies.

‘Greening up’ on the betting exchanges, refers to having a profit figure next to every possible selection in an event. It is called ‘greening up’ as when the returns are positive on the betting exchanges, they are displayed in green, simple really. So just how do you green up? Well as eluded to above, this process can be achieved through trading. Backing a selection as long odds and then laying that same selection at shorter odds can result in a profit regardless of the outcome. Alternatively, laying a selection at short odds, and backing it when the odds increase, is also an avenue to green up.

Live betting has expanded the options to ‘green up’ as the odds will change through the course of an event. Live betting on football is popular and to illustrate how to green up, we use a hypothetical match of Manchester United at home to Southampton. United have been poor this season, but are still offered at short odds as they are perceived to be difficult to beat at Old Trafford. In this hypothetical example they are available at odds of 1.50, but have found it difficult to score early. The following strategy could be employed:

LAY Manchester United pre-match for a stake of £100. At 1.50 the means the liability on the bet is £50.

At half time, the match remains 0-0 and the odds on Manchester United winning, have increased to 2.0. The following bet can now be struck:

BACK Manchester United at odds of 2.0, with a stake of £75. The return if they win is £150.

By placing these bets, a guaranteed profit of £25 can be achieved. If Manchester United go on to win the game, the loss of £50 on the pre match lay is offset by the £75 profit made at half time.

If Manchester United fail to win, £100 profit is achieved from the pre match lay and is reduced to £25 overall profit when subtracting the £75 back stake which was placed at half time. We have greened up for £25 guaranteed profit.

Greening up can be done on any event, and can be a strategy implemented prior to an event starting, through a combination of pre event and live betting, or solely in the live markets. All that is required is a change in odds and catching the odds at the right times.

Aberdeen v St Mirren | Betting Preview

Aberdeen v St Mirren | Betting Preview

Date: September 30, 2014
Venue: Pittodrie Stadium, Aberdeen, Scotland
Kick off time: 19:45 hrs BST

The Pittodrie Stadium in Aberdeen will be the setting this week when Aberdeen take on St Mirren in the Scottish Premier League. While the home side find themselves in a mid-table position currently with a game in hand over all but one of the teams above them, St Mirren are placed second bottom in the league.

Aberdeen form: W-W-L-W-L

Aberdeen are riding a bit of momentum into this upcoming match after a couple of successive victories at home against Ross County and Inverness. While they beat Ross County quite easily in the end as was evidenced by the 3-0 score-line, the win in the following week against Inverness was anything but straightforward.

Aberdeen had gone ahead a couple of times in the match only for Inverness to equalize on both occasions. They were however, able to hold on once Jonathan Hayes put them ahead for the third time just before the hour mark.

St Mirren form: L-W-L-L-L

Inverness have suffered an awful season in the Scottish top flight this term and come into this fixture after being beaten in front of their home fans by Celtic on September 27.

Their only win in their last five games this season came in an away game at Partick Thistle FC when Callum Ball equalized on the hour mark and Kenny Mclean gave them a 2-1 victory thanks to an injury time strike.

Key Players

Aberdeen: Adam Rooney

Rooney has been in red hot form for Aberdeen in recent times and he netted a hat-trick for the Reds as recently as September 23. Expect the 34 year old striker to give the St Mirren defenders an extremely tough 90 minutes on Wednesday.

St Mirren: Kenny Mclean

Mclean can hold his head high despite the poor season that his team have had so far. The former Scotland under-21 midfielder has contributed a fair share to whatever good work that his team have done in their past three matches, getting on to the score-sheet a couple of times in that time.

Betting Advice

Aberdeen will be looking to hold fort and it’s difficult to see them imploding against what looks like a poor St. Mirren side. They are 1.64 (bet365) to win the game to the 5.75 (BetVictor) if St. Mirren can upset the opposition.

Sporting Lisbon v Chelsea | Betting Preview

Sporting Lisbon v Chelsea | Betting Preview

Date: September 30, 2014
Venue: Estadio Jose Alvalade, Lisbon, Portugal
Kick-off time: 19:45 BST

Group G in the Champions League has all the teams tied with each of them on a solitary point. Sporting CP were held by the lowly Maribor team, while Chlesea were strangled by an impressive Schalke 04 team in the last CL gameweek.

Sporting CP form: W-D-D-W-D

Sporting’s domestic form has been okay and their main problem has been getting many draws in along the way. They are sixth in the Portuguese league on ten points, six points behind league leaders Benefica.

In the last match against Porto FC, they showed great discipline in the midfield and enough attacking impetus was there with Nani and Co. An unlucky own goal by Mouhamadou-Naby Sarr gave Porto the lifeline, for Sporting it was a heartbreak. This season the main issue has been scoring goals for Sporting and this can haunt them in the end.

Chelsea form: W-D-D-W-W

Chelsea’s last CL game against Schalke highlighted their defensive issues, masked by their free scoring run. Schalke midfields carved open the pivot of Cesc Fabregas and Nemanja Matic. Fabregas’ tendency to ignore his defensive duties over burdens Matic, a recurring theme since the start of the season.

Any good side will be able to punish this, as Schalke showed.

Key Players

Sporting CP: William Carvalho

His burgeoning reputation attracted many clubs including Chelsea and for Jose Mourinho this will be another chance to scout him. Carvalho can break up the play and find any man in front of him. His passing range is wide and can be the creator and destroyer in the centre of the park

Chelsea: Thibaut Courtouis

The gangly goalkeeper has been impressive on his Chelsea return, keeping Peter Cech on the bench. His long limbs can keep ball out of the net, thanks to the long reach. His distribution is also decent along with his concentration. He’s never been caught snoozing in the goal.

Betting Advice

Chelsea are 1.75 to win this game but I think the hosts will give them a fine run for their money. Less than 2.5 goals in the game looks more appealing at 1.85 with BetVictor.

Shaktar v Porto | Betting Preview

Shaktar v Porto | Betting Preview

Date: September 30, 2014
Venue: Arena Lviv, Lviv, Ukraine
Kick-off time: 19:45 hours BST

Champions League’s Group H’s more prominent fixture, played between Shaktar Donetsk and FC Porto, will be exciting to watch from a neutral point of view. Both teams have been domestically strong this season and will be looking to lock horns to try to maximize their chances.

FC Shaktar Donetsk form: W-W-D-L-W

Shaktar’s problems related to the ongoing Ukraine crisis may well have been pushed to the background. Shaktar’s important players like Douglas Costa and Luiz Adriano are back where they belong and are looking sharp. The Ukrainian side sit second in their domestic league and second in the group H.

Against FC Porto, they have a task cut out to keep at bay the Porto attackers.

FC Porto form: W-W-D-D-W

Porto’s domestic form has been okay, but their first Champions League game against BATE Borisov was phenomenal. They decimated the BATE side, scoring six goals in the process. Porto, traditionally, are strong in Europe in the group stages and will be looking for another win in Ukraine.

They have strong forward line that may cause problems for the Ukrainians.

Key Players

FC Shaktar Donetsk: Djario Srna

The Czech international has been at the heart of Shaktar’s defence this season. His fine form has gone a bit unnoticed, as he has done all the dirty work for his team. A leader of men he has rallied the Shaktar defence and provided a strong base for the midfielders to work on.

FC Porto: Jackson Martinez

The rugged Colombian forward did not feature heavily in the World Cup, but hit fine form for the Portuguese side. Five goals in six matches is not a bad return at all for the Colombian international. His physical presence and technical qualities is an asset for any European side.

Betting Advice

Porto will be sharper attack wise, but considering the game is at Shaktar’s home the game could end up being a draw with BetVictor offering 3.1 for a stalemate. Over 2.5 goals to be scored at 2.2 with BetVictor as well.
